The First Communion is a Catholic celebration.  There are some Lutheran churches that celebrate it as well.  However, it is a staple in the Catholic religion.  You may be wondering, "what is First Communion?".

It celebrates the first time a child receives the Sacrament of the Eucharist.  They will have studied for this occasion and will be required to know the importance, and meaning, of receiving this blessed sacrament.

Usually, if a child has been baptized as a baby and has attended religious classes beginning in the first grade, they will celebrate their First Communion at about 7 or 8 years of age.  It is required that they be at an age of reason.  They will need to understand that they are receiving the body and blood of Jesus Christ.  They will also need to understand that this is a holy offering and much different from regular food and drink. Your child should be able to express the meaning of their First Communion clearly and in a way anyone can understand.

Prior to receiving this sacrament, they will have had to participate in their first confession and sacrament of penance.  This will absolve them of their sins and allow them to accept the body of Christ from a state of purity. 

First Communion is a very special time in a young child's life.  It is a also a joyous occasion for the whole family to celebrate.  After the church ceremony, families will traditionally gather to show support for and celebrate a child's commitment to his or her religious life.
